In conjunction with the symposium the Institute along with CR2 and the University of California is hosting an official UNFCCC COP 25 side event: Enhancing the Paris Ambition: Universities, Science, Humanities and Arts Interfaces 4 Future Life reporting on the Chilean social crisis as climate crisis visionary solutions for knowledge production, climate justice, education and engagement to enhance and accelerate the Paris ambition. Theme Accelerating climate change action: Social crises and climate emergency. Beyond The Paris Agreement

Currently there is a significant gap between the aggregate effect of the signatories鈥 mitigation pledges in terms of global annual emissions and attempts to keep the rate of warming below 2 degrees. Failure to achieve such a goal will make worldwide efforts to end poverty and reverse inequalities more difficult or impossible. The ongoing social crisis in Chile is strongly connected with the climate emergency which, in case of no action, could make the situation even worse, for example intensifying water scarcity, increasing natural resources competition, and ecosystems degradation. In such a complex scenario, KCCA has a twofold goal. On the one hand, to highlight the interconnection between social crises and climate emergency by sharing experiences, scientific evidence and traditional knowledge from different perspectives - to dig deep into the importance of addressing social demands along with environmental and climatic challenges. On the other, to help accelerate the decarbonization of the atmosphere while promoting a fair, habitable world that honors the rights of human and non-human stakeholders. This requires alternative solutions that can complement, work with, and enhance the ambition of existing implementation strategies in the Paris Agreement and national programs. Presenters will reflect on connections between social and environmental demands from their differing perspectives.

KCCA will contribute to imagining post carbon futures and accelerating pathways to their achievement. With a focus on Chile and Latin America, the symposium will bring politicians, UNFCCC officials and scientists together with activists, artists, youth, indigenous communities, academics, NGOs and cultural institutions to facilitate knowledge exchange, partnership building and policy discussion.

Tema Acelerando la acci贸n ante el cambio clim谩tico: Crisis sociales y emergencias clim谩ticas. Mas all谩 del acuerdo de Paris

Actualmente existe una significativa brecha entre el efecto agregado de las promesas de mitigaci贸n de los pa铆ses firmantes del Acuerdo de Par铆s, en t茅rminos de emisiones anuales globales, y los intentos de mantener la tasa de calentamiento por debajo de 2 grados. Si no se logra ese objetivo, los esfuerzos mundiales para acabar con la pobreza y revertir las desigualdades ser谩n m谩s dif铆ciles o imposibles. La crisis social en curso en Chile, est谩 fuertemente relacionada con la emergencia clim谩tica que, en caso de no ser enfrentada, podr铆a empeorar la situaci贸n, por ejemplo debido a la escasez de agua, el aumento de la competencia por los recursos naturales, y la degradaci贸n de los ecosistemas. En un escenario tan complejo, este simposio tiene un doble objetivo. Por un lado, busca relevar la interconexi贸n entre las crisis sociales y la emergencia clim谩tica mediante el intercambio de experiencias, evidencia cient铆fica, conocimientos tradicionales y expectativas sobre este tema desde diferentes puntos de vista, para profundizar en la importancia de abordar las demandas sociales junto con los desaf铆os ambientales y clim谩ticos. Por otro lado, busca contribuir a acelerar la descarbonizaci贸n de la atm贸sfera al tiempo que promueve un mundo justo y habitable que honra los derechos de los individuos 鈥嬧媓umanos y no humanos al ofrecer soluciones alternativas que pueden complementar, trabajar y mejorar las estrategias de implementaci贸n existentes en el Acuerdo de Par铆s y a trav茅s de programas nacionales.

Con un 茅nfasis en Chile y Am茅rica Latina, el simposio quiere contribuir a los objetivos globales de imaginar futuros post carbono y acelerar las v铆as para alcanzarlos. Para hacer esto, el evento reunir谩 a pol铆ticos, funcionarios de la CMNUCC y cient铆ficos junto con activistas, artistas, j贸venes, comunidades ind铆genas, acad茅micos, ONG e instituciones culturales para el intercambio de conocimientos, la creaci贸n de asociaciones y debates pol铆ticos.

A lo largo del simposio, se invitar谩 a los y las oradores a reflexionar sobre las conexiones entre las demandas sociales y ambientales y c贸mo desde sus posiciones y experiencias se podr铆an abordar la acci贸n clim谩tica y los desaf铆os sociales.
