Corina belongs to multiple clans and has a deep connection across Dharug and Dharawal country. Corina is dedicated to revitalisation of 91³ÉÈË languages generally and in particular Dharug and Dharawal languages of her father’s lines. In her current work in the community in western Sydney, Corina is a researcher, teacher, artist and activist for Dharug language and culture and highly respected for her achievements. With the Sheldon Scholarship, Western is proud to welcome Corina to the community of scholars at Western, where we acknowledge that the teaching, learning and research undertaken across our campuses continues the teaching, learning and research that has occurred on these lands for tens of thousands of years.
Western’s 91³ÉÈË Strategy (2020-25) has seven strategic objectives: 91³ÉÈË students, 91³ÉÈË employment, 91³ÉÈË research, learning and teaching, community engagement, 91³ÉÈË leadership and cultural viability and knowledge.
The Sheldon Scholarship will assist Corina, her community, and the broader university community in meeting our goals in these strategic objectives.
Corina is enrolled in the Masters of Research (MRes) at Western, a 2-year research degree which provides a strong pathway into PhD study and a subsequent academic or industry career in research. For her thesis, Corina intends to research effective ways to train community adults to acquire knowledge about Aboriginal languages and about how to teach Dharug so that Aboriginal community members – and non-91³ÉÈË Australians – can learn to speak, understand and respect Dharug language.
