Clinical waste is managed at source with specialist service providers.

FOGO is available across our campuses to support simple, effective waste separation and reduce waste to landfill. By capturing food and garden waste, FOGO helps divert organic material from landfill, lower emissions, and improve resource recovery outcomes.

What to put in FOGO

• Food scraps (fruit, vegetables, meat, bones)
• Bread, rice and pasta
• Coffee grounds and tea bags
• Garden waste (leaves and clippings)

What not to put in FOGO

• Plastics (including “biodegradable” plastics unless approved)
• Glass and metals
• Hazardous or chemical waste

Using the right bin and avoiding contamination ensures FOGO can be processed effectively.

• General waste is collected by cleaners and compacted on Hawkesbury, Parramatta, Nirimba, Penrith and Campbelltown campuses.
• General waste bins and co-mingled recycle bins are located at the smaller sites, 1PSQ - 169 Macquarie Street Parramatta, 6 Hassall Street Parramatta, Parramatta North, Macarthur Clinical, Blacktown Clinical, Lang Walker Medical Research Building, Liverpool and Westmead campuses.
• Recycling of materials is increased substantially through waste compaction.
• General Waste - items that can or cannot go in your general waste bin.
• Recyclables - items that can or cannot go in your recycling bin.

Laboratory waste is managed by the relevant Schools.

Other waste services include:

• include trade waste (grease traps)
• recycling of metals
• batteries
• fluorescent lights
• toner cartridges
• styrofoam packaging

• Blue bins and office bins are emptied into recycling skips that are sorted into material grades for recycling processes.
• Confidential papers (blue bins w/yellow lids) are securely transported to waste facility and shredded prior to recycling.
• Paper/cardboard - items that can or cannot go in the paper/cardboard bin.

• Sanitary waste bins are serviced by GJK Facility Services under the cleaning contract.
